Introduction to Alexandria - Beach
Rows of beach huts and stilted casinos dot the corniche along Alexandria's Mediterranean Sea coastline, which was surrounded by a medieval eight-kilometre long wall until well into the 20th century. Today, most guests at Alexandria Beach hotels are Egyptians, but some resorts cater specifically to the growing numbers of foreigners who are discovering the dozens of beaches in Egypt's 'Pearl of the Mediterranean'. Most entertainment and tourism facilities are situated in two western beaches called Agami and Hannoville, but Stanley Beach is the closest to Egypt's second-biggest city. A scuba diving centre and several natural bays are features of the five El-Montaza Palace beaches, while clear waters lie in the secluded Sidi Abd al Rahman Bay. The whirlpool Cleopatra's Bath, an early Coptic chapel, Rommel's hideout cave and the ruins of a temple fort built by Ramses II are all found near Mersa Matrouh's long white-sand beach. These are among the few ancient landmarks remaining from the city's glory years as Egypt's capital during the Roman Empire.Visit our Alexandria Travel Guide
