National Museum (Nationalmuseet): provides a wonderful insight into the history and culture of Denmark. The complex itself is huge, divided into five sections that are each devoted to one aspect of the country’s past. Exhibits dating back to the Stone Age right up to the Renaissance are featured, with collections of Viking artefacts, royal history and ethnic Eskimo culture.
Fredriksholms Kanal 12. Open: 10:00 to 17:00 Tuesday to Sunday.
Open-Air Museum (Frilandsmuseet): comprises a village reconstructed to portray centuries-old rural life in Denmark. On the 90 acres of grounds are a variety of traditional structures representing several periods and regions of the country. Staff dress in authentic period costumes and all of the museum’s 100 buildings are filled with period furniture and objects from daily life.
Kongevejen 100, 2800 Kongens Lyngby. Open: 10:00 to 17:00 Tuesday to Sunday.
Museum of Decorative and Applied Art (Kunstindustrimuseet): is now housed in the former Royal Frederik Hospital, a building dating from the 1700s. The four wings of the hospital were converted for use as a museum and underwent restoration in the 1920s.
They contain displays and collections of decorative and applied art from the Middle Ages to the present. Included in the museum’s wide range of exhibits are furniture, glassware, pottery and tapestries as well as a fascinating collection of Oriental arts.
Bredgade 68. Open: 11:00 to 17:00 Tuesday to Sunday.
Significant attention is paid to Denmark’s most renowned artists as well. In the new wing you’ll find a children’s art museum, making this a suitable destination for the entire family.
Solvgade 48-50. Open: 10:00 to 17:00 Tuesday and Thursday to Sunday.
Louis Tussaud Wax Museum: was opened by the famous Madame Tussaud’s great-grandson and is one of Copenhagen’s leading attractions. Two of the most popular sections include the ‘fairytale’ section and a ‘chamber of horrors’. The museum is located in the centre, in Tivoli Park.
HC Andersens Boulevard 22. Open: 10:00 to 23:00 daily.
