Introduction to Silkeborg, Denmark
The large Jutland city of Silkeborg makes for a great overnight stop for visitors touring central Denmark. From its beginnings as the site of a paper mill in the mid-1800s, the city has developed into a vibrant destination featuring a number of unique events and attractions. The Silkeborg Langso lake separates the city's north and south, with the Guden River flowing to the east. Silkeborg hotels are at their busiest during the Ildfestregatta fireworks regatta, held every three years in August. Spanning four days, this massive event sees laser shows, amusements, live music and of course, fireworks! While snow only falls in winter here, skiing at the local nylon track is possible year round. History buffs looking for diversions from local events and dry skiing will want to take in the Silkeborg Museum, home of the Tollund man, a remarkably well-preserved mummified corpse, or 'bog body', dating back to the 4th century BC.
