Introduction to Roskilde, Denmark
Roskilde, on Zealand Island, has a history dating back to Viking times. Easily visited by travellers en route to the west of Denmark from Copenhagen, the city has a pedestrian-only main street lined with cafes, shops, eateries and Roskilde hotels. Dominating the centre is the UNESCO World Heritage site of Roskilde Cathedral, Zealand's only cathedral up until the 20th century and one of Denmark's largest. This Gothic brick church dates back to the 12th and 13th centuries and is the final resting place of a number of notable Danish monarchs. Adjacent to the cathedral is the 18th century Roskilde Palace, which presently houses a museum. However, the most visited museum in the city is without doubt the Viking Ship Museum, where the remains of no less than five Viking ships are on show.
