Introduction to Hillerod, Denmark
Well worth a daytrip from the Danish capital, just 40 minutes away by train, Hillerod in North Zealand is one of the capital region's largest cities. The highlight of a visit here is Frederiksborg Castle, the one-time seat of Danish kings. Today, the Renaissance castle is home to a fascinating history museum. Not to be missed on a visit here are the wonderful 18th century Baroque gardens adjacent to the castle, which is accessible on foot from the city's main rail station and Hillerod hotels. Aebelholt Abbey may stand in ruins, but the remains of this vast Augustinian monastery to the northwest of the city centre make for great sightseeing. The on-site history museum here traces the monastery's founding in the late 12th century through to its demise following the Reformation. Another even earlier abbey, Esrum, to the north, features a museum on the Cistercian order that once inhabited it.
