Set in the centre of Jutland, the Danish city of Herning is best known for its massive conference centre, the largest in Scandinavia, and was established in the 19th century to serve as the commercial hub of its agricultural region. The original textile industry based here has largely disappeared, with various industries taking its place. Herning City Centre hotels are augmented by hotels set close to the conference centre. Another feature of the city centre is its well-known Museum of Art, displaying works by contemporary Danish artists. The famous Danish architect Jorn Utzon was responsible for three iconic buildings in town, and sculptor Inkvar Kronhammer's monumental black-painted Elia dome has four staircases set into its bulk at the planet's cardinal points. Four massive steel columns capped by smaller domes rise to the structure's full height and attract lightning during storms, while a fifth central column emits a pillar of fire.
