Introduction to Herning - Birk
A small suburb of the city of Herning, Birk is a university town whose population is in the large part made up of students. The cultural highlight here is the Carl-Henning Pedersen and Else Alfelt Museum, which features a range of modern art and design pieces including pyramid-like, open-air sculptures. Also in the area is the Herning Museum of Contemporary Art, which features rotating exhibitions of artwork and photography from Danish artists. The museum is open every day except Mondays. Some of the houses in the area are themselves worth a close look as there are a number of classic, thatched examples typical of the Jutland region. Getting into the centre of Herning from here is straightforward by taxi or bus, with the journey taking just 15 minutes. Birk hotels are hardly numerous but there is some great value three and four-star options available within walking distance of the city's best museums.
