Denmark's Grenaa features a busy ferry port that serves car ferries between this central Danish town and Sweden's Varberg. More of a stopover destination for travellers en route to other places than a travel destination in its own right, the town ranks as the biggest in Norddjurs Municipality, with a population of around 15,000. Comfortable Grenaa hotels are on hand for those who need to spend the night. If you have time to kill before your ferry, pay a visit to the delightful Grenaa Church, the original of which was destroyed by fire in the mid-17th century, or the Kattegat Shark Centre, an aquarium exhibiting native marine life. Golfers can make use of the golf club just to the west of town, while beach ramblers will find plenty to amuse themselves along the Kattegat shore. It is possible to take a three-hour ferry ride from here to the naturally beautiful Anholt, a tiny Danish island that receives 60,000 visitors annually. Grenaa is situated inland from the Jutland coast by about two kilometres.
