Introduction to Copenhagen - Amager
Once considered the backwaters of Copenhagen, the island community of Amager is slowly emerging as a pleasant and even desirable place to live for the working class of Denmark's capital, with its natural attractions and mix of old and new. It is just to the southwest of the centre of Copenhagen, and is best know as the site of Copenhagen Airport. The island is a fascinating place of contrasts, from the slick modern development of Orestad to the incredibly quaint traditional fishing village of Dragor. The wild wetlands of Kalvebod Faelled are also here, providing a unique swath of nature right on the doorstep of the capital. Kastrup Fort, once one of Copenhagen's important defense barriers, has been transformed into a park with interesting historic and recreation activities. Amager Strandpark is perhaps the most popular spot on the island, as it's the largest public beach around Copnehagen. There are plenty of amenities around the island, as well as a good selection of Amager hotels for anyone seeking a quieter alternative to staying the bustle of the capital proper.
