January Festivals
Ball Season: begins in January and sees a number of balls taking place at different venues across the city. People of all ages and backgrounds attend them to enjoy the music, dancing and themes. Themed balls are very popular and include themes such as: naughty, smart, policemen and leather. The ball season carries on until the beginning of Lent.
April Festivals
Witches Night: held on 30 April, and is an ancient folk festival which combines Halloween and May Day. It marks the end of winter and the arrival of spring. Model witches are burned on bonfires, as witches symbolise winter and the death of a witch symbolises the end of winter.
June Festivals
Khamoro: is the festival of Roma, celebrating the gypsy culture. Dances and theatre productions are held along with films and art exhibitions.
Dance Prague: is held in June and is the city’s major dance festival. It celebrates the art of dance and sees a number of performances of all standards and ages.
October Festivals
Vokaliza International Jazz Festival: is held in October and celebrates Prague’s jazz scene. The Lucerna Bar hosts many jazz nights and impromptu performances which are great fun.
December Festivals
St Nicholas’ Eve: takes place on 5 December and sees a man dressed as St Nicholas along with an angel and a devil visit children to hand out sweets and small gifts. Children wait impatiently by Charles Bridge in a wonderfully festive atmosphere.
International Festival of Advent and Christmas Music: takes place throughout December and boasts carol concerts at venues citywide. There is a final concert in the Old Town Square on the last night.
St Sylvester’s Eve: is known by most as New Years Eve. Parties take place across the city, with most people congregating in Vaclavske Namisti and the Old Town Square to hear the clock strike midnight.
