Prague Travel Guide - Day Trips
Kutna Hora: is a medieval silver mining town that is just an hour away by car. In the 13th century, silver was discovered here, and a few decades later, the royal mint was established.
The town became famous for producing the Prague groschen coins and it soon became one of the most important towns in Bohemia. The Gothic Cathedral of Saint Barbora and Wallachian Court, the former royal mint, are just two of the impressive sights to see.
Konopiste Chateau: is a stunning medieval castle built by Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Konopiste is renowned for its large collection of Ferdinand's hunting trophies and weapons as well as antique furniture and art objects. The Rose Garden is popular with all visitors and offers perfect photo opportunities.
Terezin Memorial: can be found in the town of Terezin and was built as an army fortress by Emperor Josef II in the 18th century. From almost the very beginning, it served as a prison, but later during WWII, it took a more sinister role as a Gestapo prison, Jewish ghetto and concentration camp.
Living conditions were terrible and those few who survived were later transported to the extermination camps in the east of the country. Terezin became a memorial in 1947.
Cesky Krumlov: is a medieval town and is one of the most charming towns in the country. Its architecture has been preserved through the ages and in the 1990s, the historic centre was restored to its original beauty. The Castle of Cesky Krumlov is the second- largest castle complex in the country and boasts exterior courtyards and Italian-style gardens, as well as intricately detailed rooms and impressive views from the towers.
