Introduction to Kolin, Czech Republic

To the east of the Czech capital by 34 miles is the town of Kolin. The Elbe River divides the town, which features numerous notable Baroque and Gothic buildings. The Central Bohemian Region town is focused around Karls Square, the main market place of Kolin, and the 13th century Peter Parler-designed St Bartholomeus Church. The town has a Jewish history, evidenced by its vast Jewish cemetery, synagogue and ghetto. Most of the town's attractions and Kolin hotels are located on the south bank of the river, where the main train station is situated. A few blocks from the river is the Regional Museum Kolin, where artefacts related to the region's past are on show. Along with St Bartholomeus Church, Burghers' House is among the most notable of the heritage buildings here, and a fine example of the town's bygone golden days. There is an annual brass band festival each June.
