Divided by the Vltava River, the Czech town of Hluboka Nad Vltavou was favoured by Charles IV, a 14th century Holy Roman emperor who founded the town's water system. The key attraction in this South Bohemian town is its Windsor style castle, dating back to the 16th century but having received its present styling in the mid-19th century. Not only should a tour of the castle be on every visitor's itinerary, but so too should visits to the riding hall and the winter garden. The former venue has been host to the Southern Bohemian gallery exhibitions since the mid-1900s. Also included on most sightseeing trips around town is the centrally located 19th century Church of St John Nepomucene. Munice Pond hugs the west side of the town, and its south shore is home to a Jewish cemetery dating to the 18th century, a small zoo and an interesting chateau that was once used to lodge hunters. Hluboka Nad Vltavou hotels are mostly located on the west bank of the river.
