Frydek-Mistek in the far east of the Czech Republic is the result of the 1943 joining of two previously independent towns, Mistek and Frydek. This administrative centre of the district of the same name is mostly visited in the warm summer months for Frydek, on the east bank of the River Ostravice, even though Mistek is actually the older part of the city, dating back to the 13th century. The town square in Mistek is a must-visit and features an image of Saint Florian. Both parts of the city boast restored architecture from centuries past, from the Renaissance homes of Frydek to the burgher houses in Mistek. The Dobra district to the east is often visited for Saint George's Church, while the 14th century Gothic Frydek Castle, which houses a history museum, is another visitor hotspot. Frydek-Mistek hotels in this Moravian-Silesian city of 60,000 are best visited in the summer months, as winters often see snow and temperatures that hover just above freezing.
