Introduction to Decin, Czech Republic
The Czech town of Decin, in the country's north, is often visited by travellers en route to nearby Germany. In fact, the town has long been a stop on the trade route between the two nations. The Ploucnice and Elbe rivers meet in town, with the latter dividing it into two main parts: the Old Town and Podmokly. The Old Town, on the east bank, offers the most attractions and Decin hotels, including an early 20th century synagogue and the 17th century Holy Rood Church. However, Decin Castle, dating back to the early 14th century, is the highlight of a visit to this history-rich city, with the castle's Baroque styling attributed to its restoration in the late 1700s. The river is crossed by two notable bridges: the Renaissance Bridge and the Sheep's Bridge. When river water levels run low, the so-called Hunger Stone reveals itself. The inscription and markings on the stone reflect the suffering of the town's residents during times when boat traffic has ceased. The town is a 1 hour, 30 minute train ride from Prague, the nation's capital.
