The second-largest city in the Czech Republic, Brno is a historical destination whose city centre is compact and easy to navigate on foot. Located around the main Freedom Square, Brno's city centre offers a wealth of places of interests for tourists including old churches, historic buildings, fountains as well as an array of places to eat and drink. The clubbing here is also noteworthy for those looking to continue on well into the night. Brno City Centre hotels are mostly located around the district of Mesto, with a number of varied options to be found just south of the main park. This is also the location of Spilberk Castle, previously a fortress which also served as a notorious prison that became synonymous with torture during the era of the Austro-Hungarian Empire that ended before the climax of WWI. These days, it's much more sedate with a museum and a restaurant.
