There have been cases of bird flu in rural Cyprus, but the risk to tourists is extremely low. If however you are visiting the northern parts of the country, you should try to avoid all contact with wild birds and ensure that all dishes containing poultry or eggs are well cooked.
Tap water is regarded as safe to drink, although most people prefer to drink bottled water as it is considered more hygienic. Milk is pasteurised and also safe to drink.
Hospitals and other health services on Cyprus are in line with international standards and are of a very high standard. If you are travelling from a country within the EU, you should carry an EHIC card which entitles you to free emergency medical treatment. If you are from a country that is not part of the EU, medical insurance is strongly recommended.
If you are issued a prescription by a state doctor, you will find that it is free provided you give it into a state pharmacy. If you do not have an EHIC card, you will be charged for all prescriptions.
