Introduction to Nicosia, Cyprus
Even guard towers and barbed wire cannot conceal the many charms of Nicosia, the national capital of Cyprus and the world's only remaining divided capital city. Most tourist attractions are situated in Nicosia's much larger southern side, from where visitors have only recently been allowed to enter its Turkish northern side. Nicosia hotels cater to guests who travel for finance or business as well as leisure visitors en route to the island's beach resorts. This city may feel much larger than its actual size, with the small Old City area containing most of its main attractions. The wall surrounding the Old City is shaped like a star and surrounded by a park which was once a moat. A cultural centre is now located at the beautifully-preserved Famagusta Gate, which used to be the city's main entrance. A giant Archbishop Makarios statue greets visitors to the Byzantine Museum, while the 14th century Hamam Omerye Turkish baths were established on the site of a former church and mosque.
