Introduction to Nicosia - City Centre
The Cypriot city of Nicosia is the capital and largest city on the island, set in its centre on the River Pedieos and designated a Beta World City. The downtown is divided by a partly-opened symbolic wall separating the Greek and Turkish enclaves, representing an, as yet, unsettled dispute between the two countries. The city is a trade centre and important commercial hub for the island, and a popular tourism destination for its long and violent history. During the last 1,000 years, it's been occupied by Venice, the Ottoman Empire, the Crusaders and the Turks. The city's core is medieval and retains well-preserved Venetian fortifications, as well as medieval and later heritage buildings and rows of traditional terraced homes. Nicosia City Centre hotels are set close to the major heritage sites and the heart of the old city, Eleftheria Square, with nearby narrow streets leading back to boutiques, cafes and the city's lively nightlife. Nicosia's museums are well worth a visit, as are its numerous old churches and mosques. Visit our Nicosia Travel Guide
