Introduction to Limassol, Cyprus
None of the seaside resorts on the island of Cyprus are as large as Limassol, whose 16km coastline is surrounded by the Troodos Mountains and their foothills. This Akrotiri Bay port has been an important wine-making area since Richard the Lionheart first conquered the community during the Crusades. Nowadays, most guests at Limassol hotels come here primarily to party in the numerous discos, pubs and nightclubs along its numerous beaches. Richard the Lionheart married Princess Berengaria inside the 14th century medieval castle, which housed a prison for 150 years and now contains the Cyprus Medieval Museum. The residential building housing the Folk Art Museum is equally well preserved, but centuries of history can be found within all of the ancient buildings along the town centre's narrow streets. An archaeological museum can be found near the municipal gardens, which feature a small zoo among their lush plants and trees. Ayios Andreas and Anexartisias are the main shopping streets here, while works by many of Cyprus' most famous artists are displayed at the newly-opened municipal art gallery.Visit our Limassol Travel Guide
