Introduction to Larnaca - Salt Lake
Salt Lake is in an area just west of Larnaca, close to the airport and handily situated for tourists but perhaps less so for the abundant wildlife here, including flocks of pink flamingos that can be seen in large numbers on the lake. The area actually includes four salt lakes connected together, which form a Special Protected Area. The winter water that accumulates then burns off during the summer, leaving a thick covering of salt and grey dust. Once the hub of the area's salt industry, Salt Lake has seen rising costs that have halted all activity, meaning the numerous bird species that flock here are mostly left in peace. Salt Lake hotels are mostly clustered to the east of the shore on a narrow strip of land which leads to the Mediterranean coastline.
