Introduction to Larnaca, Cyprus
No other Cyprus city boasts as large a port, as busy an airport or as long a history as the southern resort of Larnaca. Most Larnaca hotels are located alongside the rows of palm trees which grow along this resort's picturesque seafront. This community is divided into an old city centre which has been settled for at least 6,000 years and a much more recent boardwalk lined with modern restaurants and shops. The city centre's oldest buildings are its 17th century fort containing a medieval museum and the 9th century Orthodox St Lazarus Church, said to have been constructed around its namesake's tomb. The Laiki Yeitonia area contains the city's most vibrant nightlife. However, the most popular attraction among scuba divers is the wreck of the Zenobia ferry, which sank in 1980. The wreck's highest point is just 18m beneath the water's surface, and visitors may even see its shadow from the air as they fly into the city's international airport. Winter visitors can see flocks of pink flamingos and the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque on the shores of the nearby Salt Lake.Visit our Larnaca Travel Guide
