Sandwiched between the Mediterranean coast to the north and the Kyrenia Mountains and national park to the south, Catalkoy is an idyllic getaway for those that like the great outdoors. Many visitors that come here are happy to lie on the likes of Lara Beach and soak up the Mediterranean sun, but there is plenty more to do besides. Catalkoy is really an outer lying area of Kyrenia, less than four miles west and where there is a stunning Byzantine castle, a beautiful old abbey with adjoined gardens and the main harbour. Here, it is possible to hire a boat to travel up and down the coast close to Catalkoy. The best time for hiking in the nearby mountains is either April or late September, when temperatures are below scorching the norm in summer. Catalkoy hotels offer a more relaxed place to stay outside of Kyrenia but being a village, options are limited.
