Introduction to Isla de la Juventud, Cuba
Located in the Caribbean Sea, Isla de la Juventud is the largest island of the Archipelago de los Canarreos. Known for its leading role in the exportation of grapefruit and oranges, this island is frequented by millions of tourists year-round. It is filled with an array of caves, diving spots, parks and beaches, the most well-known being Bibijagua Beach, which is famous for its black sand and old-style charm. There are impeccable scuba diving conditions in Punta Paraiso, which can be accessed by bicycle or even a horse-drawn buggy. This region is full of historic landmarks including the former prison of Presidio Modelo, which was once occupied by Fidel Castro. This secluded island can be reached by hydrofoil or ferry, both of which offer scheduled departures from Surgidero de Batabano.
