Introduction to Opatija - City Centre
A popular seasonal resort destination, the Croatian town of Opatija sits in a well-sheltered position inside the Gulf of Kvarner. The variety of names by which the town is known is a testament both to the history of the region and the town's proximity to several other great European nations. The Italians call the town Abbazia. The German name for it is Sankt Jacobi. Whichever name you prefer, you will find one of the Adriatic's true gems. Impressive buildings located in the city centre include a Benedictine abbey from the 14th century, located in Saint James's Park and from which the town derives its Croatian name. The waterfront areas are extremely pretty and the town is backed by beautiful, forested mountainous countryside.
