Introduction to Opatija - Beach
Surrounded by scenic woods of bay laurel, the source of bay leaves used in cooking, Opatjia is an increasingly popular seaside resort that is also developing a winter following. Temperatures throughout the year here are mild and mostly warm, and it is almost never crowded. Located at the bottom of the 1,400-metre high Ucka Mountain, the town boasts some interesting cultural artefacts including the Maiden with the Seagull, a statue from the middle of the last century. The town takes its name from a 14th century Benedictine abbey in St James Park and nearby is a church of the same name, all of which are worthwhile sites to visit here. To take in the vistas around the town and the beach, head to the main promenade, some seven miles long, for a stroll.
