Puntarenas is Costa Rica’s largest province. Its main attraction is the beautiful beaches that line the Pacific coast. The largest city in the province is also named Puntarenas and here is where you will find the majority of Puntarenas hotels. It used to be the main port in Costa Rica but now only handles mainly cruise ships and a large fishing fleet. The city is well known for its seafood and boasts some of the best seafood restaurants in the whole of Costa Rica. Specialities include the shrimp scampi and fresh marinated fish known as ceviche. Hotels in Puntarenas can get extremely busy at weekends when locals from San Jose come to the town. It is a fun place to spend a few days and many of Puntarenas hotels are located close to the waterfront where you will find many bars and restaurants. Many of the beachfront restaurants specialize in delicious deserts and ice creams.
