Located about 25kms from the capital of Costa Rica, San Jose, the city of Cartago is a stunning settlement certainly worth spending time at. It is situated right in the heart of Costa Rica, at the foot of the spectacular Irazu Volcano. Altogether, the city has a population of about 150,000 people. Due to the legend of La Virgen de los Angeles, the Basilica of Cartago is the main sight in the city. However, there are numerous other sights that visitors shouldn't miss. One of these is the ruins of Cartago, which like the basilica, have an extremely spiritual side that is strongly followed by locals. Daytrips to the nearby volcano are recommended, too, as visitors will rarely see such a wonderful geographical marvel in their travels. Cartago hotels provide information about the sights around town, and are generally close to the main attractions. The easiest way to get to the city is via San Jose's international airport then by bus, car or taxi the rest of the way.
