Shanghai Travel Guide - Getting Around
Public buses: you should feel very proud of yourself if you manage to get to your destination using the bus as they do not cater to tourists’ needs. Signs are in Chinese and it is often difficult to get people to understand what you want. Having said that, buses connect to almost every district in and around the city.
Metro: offers fast and clean train services that connect to limited parts of the city as the line is still under construction. Services begin at 05:30 and end at 22:30. Announcements are made in English and the service is very easy to use.
Taxis: despite the heavy traffic, this is probably the most convenient way for a visitor to get around. Taxis are clean, air-conditioned and all taxis are metered. It is best to have the address written out in Chinese but many taxi drivers can understand a little English. They operate 24 hours a day.
