Beijing Travel Guide - Getting There
By air: situated 28kms northeast of downtown Beijjing, the Beijjing Capital International Airport (PEK) is a large and busy facility that provides 98 international routes as well as 757 domestic and 21 regional routes. Connections are available to a total of 54 cities in 39 different countries. The airport has a good selection of facilities including essentials and those aimed at passenger comfort as well as a reliable ground transportation system.
By train: Beijjing is China’s railway hub, offering connections to almost all provincial capitals and every neighbouring city. Beijjing Railway Station and Beijjing West Railway Station are the most significant stations, serving the country’s most popular destinations. From theses, you can connect with Baotou or Shanghai or pick up international connections to cities such as Moscow and Ulan Bator. Services are frequent and relatively reliable although perhaps not especially fast.
By road: as foreign visitors may only drive in China after obtaining a licence from a local police station (a test must first be passed), hiring a car and making your own way to Beijing is certainly not the best idea. Add to this the fact that driving conditions are hazardous and very little regard is given to the rules of the road and you can appreciate why very few visitors even consider driving themselves. It is however possible to rent a car with a driver and have he or she transport you to Beijing from a neighbouring city.
