Known as the Chinese communist capital, the city of Yan'an has a colourful military history, having housed the headquarters for the Chinese Armed Forces during the Chinese Anti-Japanese War and China's War of Liberation. This has left the city with well over 100 revolutionary sites, as well as many cultural and scenic attractions. The nine-storey pagoda, safety bell and peace drum on Baota Hill are symbols of the Chinese revolution, and the view overlooking the city is spectacular. Tour the important halls of Yangjialing village and the communist farming development at Nanniwan Gorge. After checking out the Revolutionary History Museum, go to Date Garden to see the Yaodong cave city. Carved into the side of the Loess Plateau, the traditional-style caves here were once used as homes by Mao Zedong and his communist supporters. Yan'an hotels can arrange daytrips to Yichuan to see Hukou Waterfall of the Yelllow River or Meishui Spring in neighbouring Ganquan County. Tourists interested in China's modern revolutionary history should be sure to have Yan'an on their itinerary.
