The Chinese former foreign treaty port of Wanzhou, better known as Wenzhou, lies in a mountainous region backing the vast country's eastern coastal plain and looking out over the South China Sea. Isolated for most of its long history, its historic buildings, both traditional Chinese and those erected by 19th century Hong Kong-based companies trading in tea, remain well-preserved. The area of the city itself has been settled for 4,000 years and was once famous for its pottery. The city's long coastline, many isolated islands and stunning landscapes make it a favourite with holidaymakers. This being China, the vibrant city centre is given over mainly to business activities, with a shopping district and a number of Wanzhou City Centre hotels. As a result, it's a comparatively wealthy city overall, with amenities to match the expectations of its two million residents. The airport is set east of the centre, hosting domestic flights plus a regular Hong Kong route, bringing international visitors to the previously remote destination.
