Introduction to Tongxiang, China
In the northern Zhejiang Province of China is Tongxiang, a typical mid-sized city with a strong manufacturing sector. There aren't many tourist attractions of note within the city itself, but just to the north, the scenic historic town of Wuzhen is well worth a lengthy visit. There are six ancient villages surrounding Tongxiang, characterised by their stone bridges, stone streets and rich cultural heritage. The canals that branch off the Yangtze River and wind through town provide plenty of atmosphere. Visitors can take a traditional boat cruise along the canals to get a behind-the-scenes look at the local way of life. Another highlight is Fanglu Pavilion, a wonderfully-preserved tea house from the Tang Dynasty that backs the river and is open to the public. Chrysanthemum flower tea from Tongxiang is famous throughout China, and one of the things not to miss when visiting the town. If possible, try to come during one of the two chrysanthemum festivals when the town really comes alive.
