Tangshan City Centre hotels are surrounded by urban loveliness where it might be least expected. Don't let the city's moniker as 'the cradle of China's modern industry' put you off from visiting as the city is actually quite attractive and has its share of greenery. The 1,300-hectare Nanhu Lake Park, in the downtown area, was built atop a former coal mine. Tangshan nestles along the centre of Bohai Bay in eastern China. It is a town full of festivals. The best of them are the old and solemn Spring Festival and Magu Festival, or Ghosts' Day. Both of these festivals bring a grand excuse for having a great time. In Anti-Seismic Square is the Anti-seismic Monument, which is meant to defy the sense of victimhood that the town experienced after a massive earthquake in 1976. More of this event and others in the city's history can be learned of at the small museum close to the city centre's earthquake memorial park.
