Introduction to Shaoguan, China
Often seen as simply a gateway to China's southern coast, Shaoguan has many worthwhile sites that should not be missed. The city centre sits between the Wu and Zhen rivers on a tree-lined peninsula that is connected to the greater city by a web of stately bridges. A famous UNESCO geological park is located on the red sandstone cliffs of Mount Danxia, where visitors can explore temples, hike along scenic trails or take boat trips on the winding river. Two famous formations on Danxia, the vivid Yangyuan pillar and the Yinyuan hole, are sure to leave a lasting impression. Nanhua Temple, one of the Five Great Schools in Buddhism, is located southwest of the city in Maba. This temple is filled with precious cultural relics and rare wooden carvings from the Song Dynasty, as well as a statue and the mummified remains of Huineng, the final patriarch of Zen Buddhism. The remains of the pre-modern hominid known as Maba Man were uncovered here; the site now includes a park and a museum, and visitors can tour the caves at Lion Rock, where the Maba Man lived. Travellers interested in these important historic moments can easily explore the area from Shaoguan hotels. other spellings: shoaguan otel, shaogun hotell, shaogun hote, shaogun hotes
