Many people believe the Tibetan city of Shangri-La only exists in fiction, but one of China's northwestern-most counties officially changed its name from Zhongdian to Shangri-La in 2001 in an attempt to attract more tourists.
Both names are used interchangeably in the area, although the name Zhongdian is still written on the local bus stations.
Although Shangri-La does not yet receive as many visitors as the nearby city of Lijiang, there are a number of things to see and places to stay here.
There is a selection of non-heated guesthouses in Shangri-La's Old Town, but most higher-end Zhongdian hotels contain central heating, air conditioning, and breathtaking mountain scenery.
Songzanlin Monastery has become the area's most popular tourist destination, but many locals also graciously welcome visitors into their homes and even teach them how to ride Tibetan horses.
The recently opened Pudacuo National Park, containing about one-third of China's bird and animal species, is a 50-minute drive outside of the county.
