Shangri-La is not only an imaginary location in a book it is now also a real place. In 2001 Zhongdian County, in China’s south-western Yunnan Province, was renamed Shangri-La County as it was felt that the county was the nearest thing to Shangri-La. The name Shangri-La also includes Jiantang Town, the county capital. Hotels in Shangri-La are scattered around the town. There are several budget options for Shangri-La hotels close to the main square in the old part of the town. Shangri-La is a travel hub for tourists making the long arduous overland journey between Kunming and Tibet. Due to this Shangri-La features several luxurious resorts, which pamper travellers. Other Shangri-La hotels are situated close to the majestic mountainous countryside around Shangri-La. Songzanlin Monastery is an imposing hill-top Tibetan monastery, north of Shangri-La, packed with antique Tibetan curios. In the environs of Songzanlin Monastery are a few more charming Shangri-La hotels. An ideal way of exploring Shangri-La’s photogenic countryside and multiple attractions is with the Tibetan horses and guides that can be found outside the town.
