Introduction to Shangri-La, China
Shangri-La is not only an imaginary location in a book it is now also a real place. In 2001 Zhongdian County, in China's south-western Yunnan Province, was renamed Shangri-La County as it was felt that the county was the nearest thing to this land. The name Shangri-La also includes Jiantang Town, the county capital. Hotels in Shangri-La are scattered around the town. There are several budget options for lodgings close to the main square in the old part of the town. This landmark is a travel hub for tourists making the long arduous overland journey between Kunming and Tibet. Due to this it features several luxurious resorts, which pamper travellers and others are situated close to the majestic mountainous countryside around. Songzanlin Monastery is an imposing hill-top Tibetan monastery, in the north, packed with antique Tibetan curios. In the environs of Songzanlin Monastery are a few more charming hotels. An ideal way of exploring this magic land's photogenic countryside and multiple attractions is with the Tibetan horses and guides that can be found outside the town.
