Popping up in the rural sections of Shangri-La county in China are many delights.

To the southeast of town, enjoy a trip to Tiger Leaping Gorge, Baishui Tableland or Wufeng Mountain, the latter which is sacred to local Tibetans.

The grasslands at the mountain's foot remain sites for horse races.

Just over 100kms southeast of Shangri-La town are the White Water Terraces, formed naturally from limestone.

And at 120kms southeast of Shangri-La town is Haba Snow Mountain, a natural reserve of rare plants and animals.

Songzanlin Monastery lies five kilometres north of Shangri-La city.

It dates to 1679 and is a great repository for Tibetan Buddhist culture.

Also north of town is the resplendent Gorge Group.

To the northeast of the city are the more accessible Bitahai Lake and Shudu Lake.

Buses go as far as Shuangqiao.

From here, your adventure will feature going horseback or walking the rest of the way.
