Introduction to Shanghai - Songjiang
Southwest of Shanghai lies Songjiang, a city where it is possible to find traditional Chinese culture alongside modern, 21st century buildings and shopping malls. The New City, an eco-friendly living area, and Thames Town, which takes its architectural inspiration from traditional market towns in England, have both recently been built here. These venues are interesting to visit and show the direction China is heading in the 21st century. There are also some old sites to visit which encapsulate China's past. The Xilin pagoda is 46 metres high and was built 600 years ago. Tourists can enjoy the gardens that surround it. The Fangta Gongyuan pagoda is another historic structure; nearby visitors can enjoy boating on a lake for a quiet escape from the chaos of central Shanghai. This city is also famous for shopping and it is possible to pick up souvenirs around the main shopping streets.
