In the 11th century, Shanghai was just a small fishing village but over the centuries it grew and spread out. Thus by the 18th century, it was one of the largest cities in China and the central area for growing cotton. Foreigners began to trickle into Shanghai to trade after the Opium Wars and the British, American and French were all designated areas to habitat without having to live under Chinese laws. This influenced the culture of Shanghai but came to an abrupt end when Communism took over.
