South of Dushan, a mountain rich in jade and grazed by cattle, lies the city of Nanyang. This city is host to a number of sites distinct for their cultural history and natural beauty, and the hometown and final resting place of Zhang Heng, the greatest astronomer, mathematician, poet and inventor of the Han Dynasty. The grave of Heng, responsible for the first odometer, seismometer and water-powered armillary sphere, is often visited. Take in a performance of wan, the local form of Chinese opera, or discover treasures from the Han Dynasty and learn about the historically worshipped chancellor Zhuge Liang at Wolong Gang. A unique temple in Nanyang is that of the holy doctor Zhang Zhongjing, famous for his many contributions to the practice of traditional Chinese medicine. Nature enthusiasts should make their way to Danjiangkou Reservoir, the scenic Shuilian (Water Curtain) Cave, the temple on Tongbai Mountain or Funiu Shan World Geology Park. Baotianman Biosphere Reserve is a new sanctuary protecting over 65 rare and endangered species, located southwest of the city in Neixiang.
