Known as the City of Eternal Spring due to its pleasant year-round climate, Kunming is the main city in China's wild and wonderful southwestern corner.

While the city itself contains a wealth of traveller amenities and cultural attractions, most of the natural highlights are found in the outskirts of the city.

The Kunming Botanical gardens are 12kms from the city centre, and together with the Black Dragon Park have been protected as a national scenic area.

The gardens contain thousands of different native plants, trees and bushes from the region and are ideal for long walks and relaxation.

Jindian Park is also outside the city, offering a mix of historic sites and natural beauty popular with locals on their days off.

Head to Dianchi Lake for a sail on Kunming's largest body of water.

Next door is the impressive Yunnan Nationalities Village, where you can learn about the many native ethnic groups that have lived here for centuries.

Some Kunming hotels can be found on the outskirts of the city, but there are far more choices within the city limit proper.
