In central Xinjiang is the mid-sized city of Korla, best known for its fragrant pears that are famous for their flavour and sweetness. The town is a major centre for oil production and the headquarters of PetroChina's operations in the region. While there aren't many tourist attractions in Korla, it is an interesting place as the old mud brick city stands side by side with the new concrete part of town. The ancient Silk Roads ran right through this area, and visitors can make the short drive out to Iron Gate Pass, a historically strategic pass. On the other side is Karashahr, a larger town with more to see and do. The Kaidu River cuts right through the city. There are several public parks, riverside paths and sections of businesses along the river. The unique Mongol influence gives Korla an interesting vibe compared with other Chinese cities. Visitors will find numerous hotels in Korla, though none of them are particularly outstanding.
