Introduction to Jiujiang, China
In Chinese, Jiujiang means 'nine rivers', signifying the massive nautical juncture that once occurred near the city. The Suojiang Tower guards the city along the Yangtze River's southern shores, protecting its historical attractions from flooding. The spectacular 6th century Nengren Temple can be found here, with its eight charming sites, and the Wave Well is the city's oldest landmark, dating back to the Western Han Dynasty. The serene pavilions at Gantang Lake provide a quiet refuge for visitors staying in Juijiang hotels near the city centre. To the south is Mount Lushan, a World Heritage site and national park filled with temples, stone inscriptions and historic relics of Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism and Islam. At the foot of the mountain sits Donglin Monastery, built by Huiyuan, the founder of the Pure Land sect of Buddhism. At Hukou, the yellow Yangtze swirls together with the blue-green waters of Lake Boyang, China's largest freshwater lake, where a mystical stone chime resonates from the overlooking limestone cliffs. This anomaly, known as Stone Bell Hill and supposedly caused by water lapping within the bell-shaped nooks and fissures at the water's edge, has been contemplated by poets for centuries. Jiujiang promises an unforgettable experience.
