Introduction to Jiayuguan, China
People from all over the world visit Jiayuguan to see the longest unbroken stretch of the Great Wall of China. Jiayuguan City developed after the fortress, as people crossing the wall at the Jiayu Pass decided to settle and conduct business at the juncture. There is a wonderful museum in the city, near Jiayuguan hotels, that tracks the history of China's greatest architectural and military achievement. The area also acts as a stopover on the Silk Road, and these two great historical wonders have produced a rich cultural heritage in Jiayugan. The Great Wall stretches across the Gobi Desert here, with the Jiayu Pass located several kilometres southwest of the city. Often called the 'Mouth of China', this impressive military fortress is the western starting point of the Great Wall, constructed during the Ming Dynasty. Two important features near the pass are the Overhanging Great Wall and the wall's First Fire Tower, sometimes called Talai River Fire Tower. Standing on the Great Wall, in the midst of the vast Gobi, it is difficult not to be taken back to ancient times and appreciate the grandeur of this historic site.
