Introduction to Huaian, China
In China's northern Jiangsu Province is the city of Huaian, an ancient transportation centre dating back centuries. The city has a highly developed system of water transport centred around the Grand Canal and three major rivers. Visitors can take advantage of this to explore the area in and around the city by boat. Lake Hongze, China's fourth-largest freshwater lake, is also a good place for water recreation. There are a number of important historic and cultural sites in Huaian that will interest visitors, including the Ming Royal Cemetery and Qingyan Garden, a classical garden park dating to the Ming Dynasty. Xuyi National Forest Park is just outside town, offering the best opportunity to experience the wildlife and nature of this region of China. Huaiyang cuisine, one of the eight cuisines in China, originated here so visitors can expect a wealth of excellent dining venues. It is easy to reach Huaian as it lies right on the Beijing-Shanghai Express train route.
