It was in January 1841 that Hong Kong became a British colony under the Convention of Chuen Pi. The Ching Dynasty, China’s last dynasty, had come to an end because of the First Opium War. This was followed by China’s second defeat in the Second Opium War and in 1860 the peninsular of Kowloon was ceded to Britain and the New Territories was leased to Britain for 99 years beginning in 1898.
