Introduction to Hong Kong - Sha Tin
Staying in Sha Tin will allow the visitor to see some of the less well-known attractions in Hong Kong. The most compelling reason both tourists and locals visit the area is to go to Sha Tin Racecourse, the second-largest racecourse in Hong Kong. Not only is it possible to watch and gamble on the races here, but there is also Penfold Park, which surrounds the racetrack. Visitors are able to watch the races from the park or simply enjoy the setting. There are also some cultural sites in this area such as the Che Kung Temple, which was restored in 1994 and worships General Che Kung, who the temple is named after. The Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery is another site of cultural interest and has 12,800 gold Buddha statues, a main temple and a pagoda, while Sha Tin Town Hall puts on regular exhibitions and musical performances. For retail, the New Town Plaza has nine floors of shopping and restaurants. Sha Tin hotels are available, although this is not an area with a large selection of accommodation.
