The Seven Sisters Festival stems from a Chinese myth which sees a weaver who was allowed to marry a cow herd from across the Milky Way. The weaver was so happy that she then forgot her weaving duties. The Emperor, who had sanctioned the marriage, then ordered that she could only meet her husband once a year, on the seventh day of the seventh moon. In keeping with the myth the celebrations include needle work competitions.
