Introduction to Hong Kong - Cheung Chau Island
Formerly a pirate's den off Lantau, which is today home of Hong Kong Disneyland, Cheung Chau Island is a traditional little community that at times feels like a million miles away from the skyscrapers of Central. Pak Thai Temple is among the oldest of its kind in the whole territory, dating back to the late 18th century. Tung Wah Beach holds another of the island's historic sites, a rock carving dating back 3,000 years that is a monument of Hong Kong. The beach here is considered the best on the island. Cheung Chau is best visited in April or May for the famous Bun Festival, a week-long event during which the entire island goes vegetarian, even the local McDonalds. Expect to see bun-snatchers climbing towers of Chinese buns in an effort to get the highest of them. Cheung Chau Island hotels are mostly clustered in the narrow centre of the island, close to the main beach and ferry terminal that runs regular services to Central.Visit our Hong Kong Travel Guide
